How You Can Effectively Control Menopausal Symptoms

by Joan Raynor,

Menopause, when a woman no longer menstruates, is a process that usually begins around age 45; however some women begin as early as age 35 or due to a hysterectomy. Not all women experience menopause in the same way. For some, menopause can bring on an array of uncomfortable symptoms. Others may experience few discomforts and are happy to no longer have periods. Although menopause is a very natural process for the body to go through, the effects can often be overwhelming.

The symptoms of menopause are common indicators of the changes in the hormones estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. This change and the symptoms caused by menopause may take anywhere from 7 - 10 years to complete and even as long as 15 years, depending upon the women. Menopause will not stop you from enjoying your life just like before, you just have to learn to adjust and find the right products to help with the relief of menopause.

But with so many pre-menopausal and menopausal symptoms to contend with it’s hard for many women to find the right solution to ease their discomforts. Women going through menopause can experience an array of uncomfortable symptoms such as hot flashes, fatigue, insomnia, loss of hair, vaginal dryness, irritability, facial hair and the most probable is weight gain. Some women have also noticed heart palpitations, headaches, muscle tension, aching joints, aching muscles, increased appetites, and dizziness.

The most common issues to contend with are hot flashes; an uncomfortable symptom of menopause that can leaves women feeling hot, sweaty and red faced. Hot flashes are a common symptom which is experienced by three out of four women in the transitional period of menopause. Another symptom women experience is weight gain. 90% of menopausal women gain some weight between the ages of 35 and 55. Most women who gain weight during menopause notice a change in body shape and can gain anywhere from 10 to 15 pounds during their menopausal years. This hormone change may begin to put weight on around your abdomen, instead of around your hips, thighs, and rear. With so many symptoms, what is the right solution to help alleviate or even eliminate these symptoms?

Many doctors are quick to prescribe hormone replacement therapy or HRT’s as a way to deal with uncomfortable symptoms; however vitamins and other natural supplements are turning out to be a great alternative for women. For thousands of years Asian women have used herbs to ease their transition into menopause. With the recent cardiovascular and breast cancer issues associated with synthetic hormone replacement therapy or HRT, it is comforting to know there are promising alternative treatments. Herbal supplements can also act on estrogen receptors to boost their function without causing the dangerous cell proliferation that HRT presents. This is important because cell proliferation spreads breast cancer cells.

So if you are a women dealing with menopause or are just planning ahead to when nature takes its change of course, know your options. Alternative medicines have been used for centuries and can be a trusted alternative.

How To Finance Weight Loss Surgery - Nurse's Guide

by Helen Hecker,

If you're thinking about getting lap band surgery or an adjustable band surgery or any type of weight loss surgery, you're probably wondering what it costs and how you're going to finance or pay for it.

First, if you're insured now or have a health insurance policy either through your private health insurance company or through your employer, contact them and ask if weight loss surgery is covered. If it is you want to know what your co-pay costs will be or what other costs you'll be responsible for or what your deductibles will be to prepare and in case you need to arrange financing for it.

Keep in mind there may be complications and there may be more hospitalizations than you planned, more follow up appointments, diet changes, etc. So keep this in mind.

Assuming you don't have insurance and need to finance your weight loss surgery there are a few options to consider. If possible, save up cash to pay for your out-of-pocket expenses, to reduce the amount that you'll need to finance.

Weight loss surgery, lap band surgery and other adjustable band surgeries are expensive. Costs can range from $10,200 to $30,500 depending on your situation, your geographical location (in some cities it can cost more), and whether or not you need extensive follow-up care.

Now you want to find the best source of financing with the cheapest interest rate. If you own your home you may be able to get a home equity loan to pay for it. A loan can also be secured by your checking or savings account or any certificates of deposit you might have.

A few finance companies specialize in giving loans for medical purposes such as weight loss surgery and other elective procedures. There are medical financing companies that specifically finance lap band surgeries only. Ask your bariatric (weight loss) surgeon for some recommendations. He or she may be able to recommend a particular company or may have a list of medical financing companies.

Credit unions and the bank you do business with are good sources for medical or personal loans. Consider a personal loan if you're not able to arrange a medical loan. They offer secured and unsecured loans, home equity loans and lines of credit. I wouldn't use a line of credit unless you know you'll have enough money in a short time to pay it back.

Then there is the almighty credit card. Yes, people have used one or more credit cards to finance surgery. Make sure you're in a situation where you can pay it back on time however.

If you have to take out a loan that carries a high interest rate, you may be able to refinance the loan later at a much lower rate by transferring the balance depending on the market.

In some cases, people have traveled out of the United States to have weight loss surgery in Mexico, Brazil or other countries. Yes, it may be a lot cheaper but you may have a problem finding a surgeon in the U.S. to do follow-up care and if you have complications, it may be a problem.

These are just a few of the ways you can finance weight loss surgery including lap band surgery and other adjustable gastric band surgeries. Take time and do a lot of research and you can save yourself a lot of money. Make sure you understand weight loss surgery and all it entails in terms of complications and risks and have your financing all in place before you commit.

What Is Grass Allergy?

by Jonathan Pitts,

Grass allergy is one of the most common kinds of allergy that occurs during the spring season and for most of the summer season. The incidence of this allergy is particularly severe during the onset of the summer season as well as when the season ends. Grass allergy is similar to hay fever as some of the symptoms and causes of the allergies are the same and treatments too are also the same. Grass allergy takes the form of diseases that affect the respiratory system. Many times, the allergy causes breathlessness similar to that produced in asthmatics. Hence, inhalants are prescribed for the allergy and it has been found that over 30% of all yearly allergies those are reported and recorded are for grass allergy.

Grass allergy is caused by contact with the allergen that produces a discomfort upon being inhaled or ingested. The most common form of allergen is the pollen that is found in the plants. There are different categories of pollen that are present in the natural surroundings and with the onset of different seasons, the pollen also pollinate and spread through the air to come in contact with people leading to the allergy. You may have read about the pollen during your school days. The pollens are so tiny and invisible to the naked eye that they can stick to the butterflies and other insects, and travel from one place to another as well as spread through air leading to their disproportionate distribution in the atmosphere surrounding the homes.

As pointed above, the allergy manifests itself through breathing disorders. One way on how to know whether someone has a pollen allergy or a grass allergy is by knowing whether the person has persistent dry cough and has a difficulty of breathing. This breathing discomfort happens because the passages in the respiratory tract are constricted as a result of the reaction against the pollen entering the tract. The body’s defenses are weakened because of the contact with the pollen and hence, normal breathing is affected and breathing becomes heavy and laden with mucus. The allergy can also cause itchiness and rashes to appear throughout the body. You should take care not to scratch these rashes as they can lead to further spread of the infection. In severe cases, fever might result as well.

The most effective treatment for grass allergy is also the most common cause for the allergy to manifest in people. By simply avoiding contact with the pollen is a sure way of not contracting the allergy. Hence, people with a history of grass allergy are advised to stay indoors during the seasons when the pollen pollinates. They are also advised to take anti-histamine to protect themselves against contracting the allergy. There are over the counter medications that are available to treat the allergy and you can also consult your doctor as well. In case of prolonged infections, it is better to seek expert medical help as soon as possible so that you recover from the allergy.

Why You Need the Best Wrinkle Cream for Face Rejuvenation and Wrinkle Elimination?

by R Kalpana,

There are always going to be so called 'experts' that want to tell you what product is the best wrinkle cream for face revitalization. However, the average person may be confused and wonder if they are listening to the right person.

One of the ways of helping us to choose is to see what studies have been conducted by scientists who test products to find out which ones work the best. The research they do is often supported by testing products on volunteers to see which ones show a significant improvement.

For example, tests have recently been conducted on antioxidants and dietary supplements. The results from these tests have shown some promise when it comes to helping to reduce wrinkles.

One particular product that has been tested is coenzyme Q10. This was used in a substance that was applied to the skin and the results showed improvement in the amount of wrinkles as well as the moisture levels.

This is an antioxidant that is known to counteract the free radicals which are responsible for the most cellular damage. The most amazing results were recorded after volunteers used Functional keratin.

In only three days, new skin cells were developing at the rate of a 160% increase. This is like finding the fountain of youth.

This tells you immediately that these two ingredients should be in the best wrinkle cream for face revitalization. With results like this, there should be no question that these two ingredients work extraordinarily well.

The biggest hurdle comes in getting the ingredients mixed to the right consistency to have the best results. Both of these ingredients must be combined with others to make the cream that will do the most good.

This is where some companies make their mistake. The ingredients that are used to mix with Functional Keratin and Coenzyme Q10 must be the proper formula to allow the ingredients to be absorbed by the skin.

Some companies saw the results of these studies and started using these two ingredients to formulas they had. This was not the right mixture so therefore their mixture did not have the results shown earlier.

The formula needed to be changed altogether rather than just adding a couple of ingredients to the one they were using. Products that use petroleum based ingredients with other beneficial ones are not going to work because the petroleum will keep the other ones from penetrating the skin.

This is one reason for avoiding mineral oil and other ingredients containing petroleum. Because most manufacturers use petroleum their products are basically useless.

This is a cheap way of making the product and the petroleum is a cheap filler. This is what big companies like to do when producing a product for general use.

By doing this they are getting the maximum amount of profits for the least amount of materials. The name of the game is to make as much money as possible.

This is not true of all companies, but many are only in business to make a huge profit and then go on to something else. This is why you need to be extremely cautious when you are looking for the best wrinkle cream for face revitalization.

Eating During Pregnancy

by Roger Noonan,

It is essential that you, as an expectant responsible mother, have a full understanding of your required nutrients while eating during pregnancy. After all, you are now eating for two. Your baby is relying completely on you to receive all his required vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and folic acid. Poor pregnancy nutrition leads to increased risk of mortality and birth defects for your baby, as he is more susceptible to degenerative diseases, and cognitive or neural disorders.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, pregnant women should increase their normal daily food intake to include the following:

Three to four servings of fruits and vegetables.

Nine servings of whole-grain or enriched bread, cereal, rice, or pasta.

Three servings of milk, yogurt, and cheese.

Three servings of meat, poultry, eggs, fish, nuts, dried beans, and peas.

This is necessary as you need to consume approximately 300 extra calories a day while eating during pregnancy, to ensure your nutrient reserves such as calcium and proteins are maintained. Remember your baby will have a high nutrient demand if he is to develop normally, and this is totally up to you.

It is very important to remain hydrated during your pregnancy by maintaining an adequate intake of fluids. This ensures that while you may be going to the toilet more often than you'd like, you are removing all necessary toxins from your system. Also, fluids do not mean caffeine! Some studies have linked caffeine to miscarriage, premature birth and low birth weight, and therefore is best avoided.

Most mothers experience morning sickness at some stage. Remember that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and this is also true for your baby. If you have trouble keeping food down in the morning, try a little fresh fruit, and maybe a little cereal with yogurt. These are packed full of nutrients. If you wish, follow this with some freshly squezzed fruit juice to set you up for the day. If you can't start your day without a cup of tea or coffee, try and have the fruit and cereal first, as tea and coffee only mask your appetite and are of no benefit to your baby.

Try and avoid having big meals during the day when eating during pregnancy, and especially before you go to sleep at night. Five or six small meals ensure that you are maintaining your body with a steady flow of essential nutrients, you are maintaining your own energy levels to allow you to carry out your tasks for the day, and at no point are you feeling sluggish and lazy. If you eat a big meal before you go to bed, your body will spend the night processing the meal, and you go will wake up feeling tired and un-rested.

It should be common sense that you need to stay away from junk food, fast food, and processed foods where possible. These foods are high in sugars and chemicals, and are little or no benefit to your baby. Steer clear of raw foods like rare meat and poultry, and raw fish, as all these foods will contain bacteria in some form that can lead to infection and food poisoning.

By closely monitoring your foods when eating during pregnancy, you are giving your baby his best possible start in life. Isn't this all you really want?

Man Boobs: The Clinical Truth

by Richard Pfeil,

Have you ever had the answer to a very important question but not been able to get anyone to listen to you? That is how I feel right now.

The biggest challenge I have ever faced in my mission to help men who suffer from excess chest fat is to get them to see that I am genuine. It is so frustrating having the clinical answers to this problem but not being able to get the people who are suffering to see that I can help them.

Of course, I understand why some people will not listen to me. They have been told so much costly and time consuming rubbish about how to solve their chest fat problem that they are now skeptical about everything, I do not blame them. This is one of those subjects where the sufferers are made more vulnerable by the very nature of their problem.

Clearly it is not something that many people feel comfortable discussing, as a result they try to find an answer on the quiet. All this secrecy allows unscrupulous people to thrive. These types of people do not care whether they actually solve the problem or not so long as they make money.

I think we can all agree that a legitimate business has a right to make money; there is nothing wrong with a business that is providing the customer with exactly want they want making a decent living.

This is exactly what I am doing, running a legitimate business that has put the time and effort into researching and testing ideas for helping men to reduce this embarrassing problem. This effort has paid off and clinical testing has now proven that I have a method that works. All I have got to do is find a way to get the message out to those that really need it.

Let me tell you three important things about this problem that few people seem to be aware of:

-This phenomenon has a medical name that can do away with all the cringe worthy pseudonyms, it is called Gynecomastia . It is a medical condition -Between forty and sixty percent of men suffer from it. -It is curable. Without surgery, starving yourself or a pile of pills.

If the people that peddle the rubbish solutions had have put in a bit of effort to find out what really works they would have discovered that the solution to Gynecomastia is even easier than their scams suggest. It is a simple matter of nutrition and teaching your body to target the correct places.

This method has been researched and tested on real men who are willing to vouch for its merits, not just plucked out of thin air. If you are suffering in silence from gynecomastia , then donĂ¢€™t. That just plays into the hands of those who want to prey on men desperate to rid themselves of this issue and get on with their live.

5 Very Effective Natural Testosterone Boosters!

by Mark Wilson,

5 Very Effective Natural Testosterone Boosters!

After testing hundreds of herbs and supplements over the last 10 years, I've discovered 5 that are the most effective at boosting testosterone levels.

Use all 5, and cycle them regularly so you don't build up a tolerance, and you'll be well on your way to boosting your testosterone levels for good.

Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali, also know as Eurycoma longifolia Jack is probably the most powerful and effective natural testosterone booster available.

If you were to only buy one supplement to boost testosterone levels naturally, this would have to be it.

Described as the "Asian Viagra" in a May 1999 report in the New Sunday Times, this herb works by stimulating the leydig cells of the testicles to produce more testosterone.

Catuaba Bark

This herb is usually taken along with Muira Puama. Both come from small to medium sized trees found in the amazon rain forest.

The bark of these trees has been used for centuries by indigenous people to increase libido and sexual stamina.

Take these herbs and you'll notice stronger erections, elevated mood, and increased sexual thoughts and motivation.

Rhodiola Rosea

A well controlled clinical trial confirmed that this herb was very effective at stimulating dopamine production in middle aged males.

Dopamine boosts libido just as powerfully as testosterone which more than likely explains it's libido enhancing effects.

When I supplement with Rhodiola Rosea I feel a strong increase in energy, motivation, and sexual desire.

Mucuna Pruriens

Like Rhodiola, Mucuna Pruriens work by increasing dopamine levels in the brain. Also called Velvet Bean, Mucuna Pruriens come from a plant that grows in the tropical regions of Africa and India.

This herb increases mood, enhances creativity, and is a very strong booster of libido.

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is a very popular natural supplements for testosterone replacement. If you've tried it in the past without success, you probably made one of two common mistakes. You either did not cycle it properly, or you took the wrong product.

I've found many Tribulas products to be of very low quality, despite wild claims, and impressive packaging. Use a quality product, and cycle it so you don't build up a tolerance, and this will quickly turn into your favorite supplement to boost testosterone levels naturally.

Famous People Who Died of Aids

By Mack LeMouse,

Rock Hudson (died 1985)

Rock Hudson was an American actor who starred in many films and several TV programmes. He was well renowned for his role in romantic comedies and as a romantic leading man (often acting opposite Doris Day), playing of his masculine looks. He was voted ‘Star of the Year’, ‘Favourite Leading Man’ and many other roles and completed around 70 films over four decades making him something of a Carry Grant-type figure. It was ironic in a way then that for all this time he was hiding his homosexuality and would succumb to, and eventually die of, AIDS at the age of 60.

Kimberly Bergalis (died 1991)

Kimberly Bergalis is an unusual addition to this list as someone whose fame actually came from their experience with AIDS as someone who would become a pivotal symbol in the debate regarding AIDS testing for health professionals. With no celebrity status before her debacle, it was a tragic way to acquire fame.

As the eldest of three daughters, Bergalis was born in 1978 and attended the University of Florida to major in business. Here she had two serious boyfriends but never lost her virginity and had never used any kind of drugs. In 1987 she had two molars removed by her dentist Dr David J Acer. Tragically, Dr Acer had been diagnosed with AIDS that year and shortly after Bergalis began to show symptoms herself. CDC tests suggested that it was Acer who infected Bergalis and several of his other patients. HIV can spread from patient to doctor, doctor to patient or even patient to patient via reusing unsterilized instruments (scalpels, hypodermic needles etc). Today almost all such instruments are disposable.

Freddie Mercury (died 1991)

Lead singer, composer, instrumentalist and front man in the band ‘Queen’, Freddie Mercury was a flamboyant and outwardly gay rock star who had many hits and achieved a high level of fame. Among his most successful hits were Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, Somebody to Love, Don’t Stop Me Now, We Are the Champions, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. When he was diagnosed as HIV positive he decided to hide this status from the general public and didn’t announce his illness until the day before he died which was a source of controversy among those who though he could raise awareness for illness. However his illness did find its way into the lyrics of his songs with tracks such as ‘The Show Must Go On’ and the never completed album ‘Made in Heaven’ strongly indicating his terminal condition.

Liberace (died 1987)

Liberace was a famous pianist and entertainer of Italian and Polish descent and was the highest paid entertainer in the world around the same time that Elvis and the Beatles.

(End time in hospital)

He public denied being homosexual (though it’s highly likely that he in fact was) and it remains a mystery how and when he became HIV positive.

Common Antioxidant Might Slow Parkinson's

By Ed Edelson

HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Oct. 13 (HealthDay News) -- A new look at some old data adds convincing evidence that high body fluid levels of the antioxidant urate slow the progressive nerve damage of Parkinson's disease.

However, the researchers also warned of the potential danger of putting that information to immediate use.

"The study doesn't prove that urate is slowing down the disease, and we need clinical trials to see if progression is based on levels of urate," explained study senior author Dr. Michael A. Schwarzschild, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and director of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. He and his colleagues reported the finding online Oct. 12 in the Archives of Neurology.

A clinical trial assessing the impact of urate on Parkinson's is beginning, funded by the Michael J. Fox Foundation. It is recruiting 90 people with Parkinson's disease at 10 U.S. medical centers to study whether regular intake of inosine, a widely available dietary supplement that is a precursor of urate, slows Parkinson's-related deterioration of nerves. Results are expected to be available in about two years, but more definitive studies will take five years or longer, Schwarzschild said.

Meanwhile, what should people with Parkinson's disease do? "They should be very cautious," Schwarzschild said. "There may be a temptation, but one should be careful because there are clear safety concerns."

The major dangers of overdosing with urate are kidney stones and gout, but there are other possible risks, such as an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, he said.

"There is a lot of vice associated with it, and because we don't know if the case is proven, it would be bad advice to take such measures," Schwarzschild said.

Another expert agreed. "I would not at this point recommend to any Parkinson's patients that they take inosine as a supplement," said Dr. Ira Shoulson, professor of neurology at the University of Rochester in New York and a member of the research team. "I would not for several reasons, mostly to do with safety but also about whether it is beneficial. These are things we have to sort out in future years."

The clinical trial currently underway is using a low dose of inosine and participants will be closely monitored to ensure safety, the researchers added.

As for natural sources of urate, they are mostly things that people are told to avoid for other reasons, Schwarzschild said -- fructose, the sugar often blamed for an epidemic of obesity; alcohol; and even smoking. "There is a lot of it in liver, but who wants to eat that much liver?" Shoulson added.

Parkinson's disease is a degenerative neurological illness in which deterioration of brain cells causes steadily worsening symptoms such as trembling and slowed motion. Indications that urate might affect the course of Parkinson's began to emerge from epidemiological studies decades ago, Schwarzschild said. More solid evidence came from a study reported last year, which led the researchers of the new study to look back at a two-decades-old study of 800 people with Parkinson's disease.

"They had donated spinal fluid as well as blood, so we were able to test for urate levels in spinal fluid, which surrounds the brain cells," Schwarzschild said.

Analysis showed that the one-fifth of participants with the highest urate levels had a 36 percent lower risk of disease progression compared to the one-fifth with the lowest levels.

"Urate is actually one of the major antioxidants that circulates in humans," Schwarzschild said. "Brain cell degeneration in Parkinson's, Alzheimer's disease or ALS [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease], is caused by oxidative damage."

But another expert agreed it's too early for dietary or treatment recommendations.

"This finding is very exciting, but not yet ready for applicability to individual patients," said Dr. Melissa Nirenberg, assistant professor of neurology and neuroscience at Weil Cornell Medical College in New York City, who was not involved in the study.

She said that the previous report had not generated many queries about urate from her patients. "This one may generate more buzz, but it is very, very concerning that uric acid is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and other diseases," she said.

If she were asked about inosine, "I would never recommend it to a patient at this stage because we don't know whether it is cause-and-effect rather than just a relationship and whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks," Nirenberg said.

'Green spaces' tied to better health

By Amy Norton,

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – People who live in green environs may be less likely than those surrounded by concrete to suffer a range of health problems, particularly depression and anxiety, according to a new study.

Researchers found that among more than 300,000 Dutch adults and children, those living near more "green spaces" tended to have lower rates of 15 different health conditions.

The link was especially strong when it came to depression and anxiety, suggesting, the researchers say, that respite from stress and the hustle and bustle of urban life may be an important for reason for the benefits of green.

The findings are published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.

Past studies have found that people who live in greener environments tend to report better subjective health. But this study is the first to use objective data on specific mental and physical health diagnoses, lead researcher Dr. Jolanda Maas, of the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, told Reuters Health in an email.

The findings build on evidence that green space has a positive effect on health and is "more than just a luxury good," Maas said.

She and her colleagues gathered their information from the electronic medical records of 345,143 patients of about 200 general practitioners. They used an environmental database on land use to gauge the percentage of green space in the patients' neighborhoods.

Overall, the study found, greater amounts of green space within one kilometer -- or 0.6 miles -- of people's homes was related to small reductions in the risks of health problems like heart disease, diabetes, chronic neck and back pain, asthma and migraine.

The strongest connection was seen with depression and anxiety. Among people who lived in areas with 90 percent green space, for example, just over 2 percent had been diagnosed with depression, compared with just over 3 percent of those living in areas with 10 percent green space.

Maas and her colleagues point out that greener environs could potentially have positive affects on health through a number of pathways, including better air quality and more opportunities for exercise.

But, the researchers add, the link with depression and anxiety suggests that stress reduction and a lesser likelihood of "attention fatigue" could be especially important.

The study also found that the relationship between green space and health was particularly strong among children and lower-income groups, which, the researchers speculate, could be because they tend to spend much of their time close to home.

Whatever the reasons for the findings, Maas said the results suggest that policymakers "should take green space into consideration" in efforts to improve the public health, especially that of children and lower-income people.

She added, though, that those green areas need to be well-maintained, as that has been found to be important in other health studies. In addition, the current study found that nearby green space did not seem to benefit the health of people in highly urban areas.

That, the researchers note, may be because people in large cities often view local parks as less than safe.

Sperm donor passed on sudden death heart defect

By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer,

CHICAGO – A sperm donor passed on a potentially deadly genetic heart condition to nine of his 24 children, including one who died at age 2 from heart failure, according to a medical journal report.

Two children, both now teenagers, have developed symptoms and are at risk for sudden cardiac death, the report says. It's the second documented instance of a genetic condition being inherited through sperm donation.

The latest case highlights the importance of thoroughly screening sperm donors, according to the report and an editorial published with it in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

The San Francisco sperm bank involved now gives all donors electrocardiogram tests to weed out men with genetic heart problems; the study authors recommend that other sperm banks follow suit.

Voluntary sperm bank guidelines say donors should be required to provide a complete medical history to rule out those with infectious diseases or a family history of inherited diseases. Many also do testing but for genetic diseases that are less common than the heart problem, according to co-author Dr. Barry Maron of the Minneapolis Heart Institute, a leading authority on the condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy thickens the heart and makes it harder to pump blood. It affects about one in 500 people; many more likely have the genetic defect without symptoms, said study co-author Heidi Rehm of Harvard Medical School.

Symptoms can include an irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath but many cases go undetected until sudden death. The condition is often the culprit when young athletes collapse and die suddenly. Treatment includes medication and an implanted defibrillator to prevent sudden death.

Neither the sperm bank nor the donor were identified. The donor, now 42, had no symptoms of genetic heart disease and no obvious family history when he donated sperm in the early 1990s. His own condition wasn't diagnosed until after a child born through sperm donation was diagnosed. Maron declined to provide more details on the donor's health, citing privacy concerns.

The children are now ages 7 to 16. Nine, including one born to the donor's own wife, tested positive for the heart mutation. One born through sperm donation died; two others have developed symptoms, with one getting a defibrillator. The remaining children are at increased risk for problems, which often don't show up until adolescence, Maron said.

The only other documented case of a disease inherited through sperm donation involved a rare blood disease.

The Fountain of Youth

by T.A. Mercurio,

The Fountain of Youth

Those seeking some sort of "Fountain of Youth" intuitively know that there is "an answer" close at hand. Most of us today are in the habit of looking for immediate and manufactured answers. They are looking for external chemicals that they can ingest or inject which will enhance their body systems. We assume that the currency from which to acquire our goal is in our wallets. If only we could find the most esoteric vitamin(s) or special exercise teacher or for that matter machine, we could buy some magic. Those of us on this path are an example of the error in assuming that the grass is always greener on the other side, someplace other than our own consciousness or Bio-yard. The search should be turned around not to external, man-made chemicals, but to the body's internal pharmacy. Those chemicals are potentially available from their very own bodies. The search should be for the way to activate this production of these chemicals from their personal "Fountain of Youth". We should stop searching for a foreign and synthetic fountain. The internal pharmacy holistically maintains all of the body chemicals in concentrations that are the correct ratio to one another. The absolute perfect ratio is called homeostasis, which in reality, is a very demanding theoretical goal that is approachable but not actually totally attainable. When outside chemicals are inserted without body control to maintain them at holistic concentrations, they act to further disturb homeostasis. The body is an electro-chemical system. This means an electrical signal (hopefully produced under body control by a nerve) ~ connected to the total nerve main frame ~ controls the chemicals your body produces. There are very specialized nerve endings which cause a nerve response to several different stimuli. It is therefore possible to alter body chemistry with light, sound, touch, movement, atmospheric pressure , humidity, heat or cold, acidic or alkaline substances and tissue damage even as mild as acupuncture. The electrical holistic control center of the body is located in the hypothalamus, which drives the autonomic nervous system. The famous pituitary glands are only a portion of the hypothalamus, which is the true "master" gland. Some means of accessing this master gland (hypothalamus) would make contact with our domestic "Fountain of Youth". This is a worthy goal and no direct method is available since we are also emotion response machines. The emotional center of the brain known as the limbic system, has many interconnections with the hypothalamus thereby making psychological factors a potent force in altering body chemistry. Also (and unfortunately), the suboccipital muscles, located at the base of the skull, rest on nerves, which reflex into the hypothalamus thereby allowing the physiological state of these muscles to act as a potent force in rearranging the correct formulas, and actually altering body chemistry. To find the internal "fountain"; this is certainly a noble quest.

With or without medication, the cold or the flu can give you real trouble. You can choose from a variety of medications that can give you some relief in symptoms or you can take the natural approach that may prevent, speed your recovery and help you to feel better along the way.

When is coming to children a cold or flu or other upper respiratory infection can also ends in an ear infection - acute otitis media - that appear in the space behind the eardrum, that is called the middle ear.

This is very common in children younger than age 8, as their immature ear can be easily infected. Their Eustachian tube (the tube that connects the throat and the middle ear) is shorter, softer and more horizontal which is more easily blocked by secretions than those of older children or adults. Also, very exposed could be infants because of their sucking habit. Always keep a breast or bottle feeding baby under an angle to prevent entering the liquid into theirs immature ear. During a cold, throat infection, allergy or other upper respiratory infection, the Eustachian tube swells and prevents air from entering the middle ear, leading to allowing the secretions to enter to the middle ear and be trapped there. This leads to viruses and bacteria to grow and cause infection.

Using salt therapy you can prevent or reduce the symptoms in cold, flu or ear infection. If your baby has a stuffy nose and has difficulty breast- or bottle feeding or seems to be short of breath, the Salin device is the best. Using Salin during the night, while sleeps, your baby wont wake you up because of the stuffy nose. He or she will be able to breathe normally, the inhaled saline will open the airways, will clean secretions and kill bacteria, reducing the duration of cold or flu and preventing an ear infection.

In the range of 0.1-2.5 microns - the same size as the most damaging micro particles from auto and industrial pollution, and invisible to the human eye -- the micro particles of salt penetrate into every corner of the bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli and deposit upon the surface, cleaning secretions, killing microbes and bacteria, leading in turn to a reduction in inflammation. Acting as a mucokinetic, they restore the normal transport of mucus and unclog blockages in the bronchi and bronchioles and upper respiratory tract. The inhaled saline (NaCl) is hydrophilic, so it absorbs the edema from the mucosa lining the airway passages. In the bronchial tree: Absorption of the inflammatory edema from the mucosa lining the bronchial tree, causing asthma, will be diminished, leading to widening of the airway passages. Also, it humidifies and fluidizes the bronchial secretions in the bronchial tree leading to the relief of the broncho- spasm assisting and improving the treatment of asthma. In the nose and para-nasal sinuses, edema of the nasal mucosa, causing nasal obstruction, will be diminished, leading to widening of the airway passage in the nose and the tubes of the sinuses and improves the sinuses drainage. In the auditory tube: Edema of the Eustachian tube mucosa, causing obstruction and otitis media, will be diminished, leading to widening of the airway passages, better drainage of the inflammatory secretions & better aeration behind the tympanic membrane (drum).

The hygiene of the respiratory tract has a very important place in treating an preventing a respiratory infection or ear infection. Here are some tips:

1. Use Salin device and Salt Pipe to clean all the respiratory tract.

2. Correctly blow your nose often - dont blow your nose hardly as the pressure can carry secretions back into your ear passages. Press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently the other.

3. Clean your nose with saline solution: mix 1.25 g salt in 1 cup warm water (body temperature) or you can also add in half-half quantities salt and baking soda. Put few drops in every nostril.

4. Place an extra pillow under your head creating an angle. The best way is to place it under the mattress to create a smooth slope. This will help with nasal congestion and also prevent ear infection.

Fear of Ebola Fever

by Loring A. Windblad,

This article may be freely copied and used on other web sites only if it is copied complete with all links and text intact and unchanged except for minor improvements such as misspellings and typos. Exotic diseases are "in" these days. In the past year we've had a flesh-eating bacterial disease, pneumonic plague and now Ebola fever of Zaire, which is not only making international headlines, but is also the subject of a best-selling novel, The Hot Zone, and a new Dustin Hoffman film, Outbreak. Within the last few decades, scientists have identified several viruses originating in Africa, perhaps in line with Pliny's ancient Greek saying: "Out of Africa, always something new" (in reference to animals interbreeding at water holes). The prophesy might apply to Ebola virus, named for a river in northwestern Zaire, and one of the most recently identified of a class of viruses that cause hemorrhagic fevers. It is responsible for the recent outbreak in the city of Kikwit in Zaire, so far having caused 205 cases and 153 deaths. Hemorrhagic fevers are zoonoses (diseases of animal origin) that spread to humans from various animals - from rodents (Bolivian and Argentinian fever), from sheep (Rift Valley fever) or from monkeys (Marburg disease). Among the more recently uncovered causes of hemorrhagic fever, the Marburg virus, transmitted to humans from Ugandan monkeys, caused several deaths among German laboratory workers in 1969. Ebola virus of Zaire, one of the deadliest, with a fatality rate of about 75 per cent, is also thought to have been transmitted to humans from some animal (as yet unidentified). More familiar hemorrhagic fevers include dengue fever, Lassa fever and yellow fever - a known danger among ancient seafarers and visitors to West Africa. Despite an effective vaccine against it, yellow fever continues to smoulder on in tropical Africa. Environmentalists believe the spread of disease from animals to humans, as with the hemorrhagic fevers, poses an emergent threat because deforestation and other drastic practices have disturbed the biological harmony of ancient ecosystems. Like other hemorrhagic fevers, Ebola virus kills by attacking the lining of blood vessels, making them "leaky" and destroying blood-clotting power, which leads to severe internal bleeding. Symptoms, which surface about 10 days after infection, include flu-like malaise (headache, sore throat, joint pains) and abrupt onset of fever. Later, in about 5 days, there may be a rash, severe stomach pains and the hemorrhagic signs - bleeding from the orifices (ears, nose), gastrointestinal bleeding and vomiting black blood. Death can follow rapidly from shock and kidney or liver failure. Although Ebola fever is a fearsome disease, the World Health Organization (WHO) officials who studied earlier outbreaks concluded that it's not easily transmitted. The virus spreads from person to person by direct contact, mostly via face to face closeness and through blood and body fluids (saliva, urine) and is often passed from ill patients to those nursing them, especially if precautionary measures aren't up to scratch. Ebola fever does not seem to be an airborne disease and simple infection control measures such as wearing gloves and masks, using disposable needles, and strict body-fluid precautions, often suffice to prevent transmission. Experience from earlier Ebola fever outbreaks gives no cause for alarm in Canada. The first known outbreaks of Ebola virus disease occurred almost simultaneously in 1976 in northern Zaire and southern Sudan, in centres about 200 km apart. A second Sudanese outbreak three years later provided much of the information available about its symptoms and spread. In both the Zaire and Sudan outbreaks, action was remarkably swift. Patients were tracked, villages quarantined and the epidemic halted within eight weeks. However, modern air travel could zip the Ebola virus from Africa to downtown Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver in 24 hours, hence public worries about it. In Canada, despite reassurances from public health officials, who have firmly stated that there's no threat of an Ebola epidemic here, one traveller who arrived by air from Zaire was detained, and call-in TV shows have been abuzz with people worrying that Ebola virus might get a toehold in this country. Officials reiterate that this is highly unlikely as it's not easily transmitted, and our stringent "universal precautions" practiced in hospital, with effective use of masks, gloves and gowns, can prevent spread. Although Ebola virus was first discovered 20 years ago, there is still no vaccine or effective cure. Outbreaks have been confined to certain parts of Africa and the infection has never been detected in humans outside that continent. Although outbreaks tend to involve serious illness, milder infection might also exist and confer immunity. Public health officials repeat that, based on everything known about it, an Ebola virus epidemic in Canada is highly unlikely. Theoretically it is possible for an infected person from Africa to arrive here on a plane and spread it, but it's improbable as people must be ill with the disease to be infectious and they would likely be picked up by immigration officials, or too sick to travel.

Strengthen the Immune System Naturally

by Cori Young ,

"Among the most exciting applications of herbal medicine lie in treating abnormalities of the immune system. Clinical studies have shown that various herbal products are effective in treating allergies, asthma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. Herbal medicine also has a unique potential usefulness in balancing the immune system in cases of chronic infection, preventing the immune system from turning on the body and causing destruction."

~Phyllis A. Balch, CNC Prescription for Herbal Healing

A healthy, properly functioning immune system is absolutely vital to good health. It is the key to the healing process from the tiniest scratch - to the most complex virus. Even the aging process is intimately linked with the immune system.

Compromised immunity leaves us vulnerable to disease and impairs our ability to heal properly and age well.

SIGNS OF IMPAIRED IMMUNE FUNCTION

CANDIDIASIS/ YEAST INFECTIONS

RECURRING INFECTIONS

CHRONIC FATIGUE

LISTLESSNESS

CHRONIC DIARRHEA

SLOW WOUND HEALING

ALLERGIES

INFLAMMATION

People who have more than 2 or 3 colds or infectious illnesses per year are likely suffering from weakened immunity

WHAT IS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM?

The immune system is a complex system of interactions involving many organs and glands as well as substances such as bone marrow, white blood cells, lymphatic vessels and serum factors in our blood. Our immunity dependson all these components functioning together.

HOW DOES OUR IMMUNITY BECOME IMPAIRED?

Unfortunately, modern life is full of things that tend to depress our immune systems.

PESTICIDES

CHEMICHALS IN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

FOOD ADDITIVES

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS

OVERUSE OF ANTIBIOTICS

POOR LIVING HABITS

STRESS

IMPROPER NUTRITION

CHEMOTHERAPY

Also many disorders have been linked to improper immune function including thyroid deficiency, diabetes, rheumatic heart disease, reheumatoid arthritis, lupus and pernicious anemia.

For optimal immune function we need to address any disorders that may be inhibiting immune function. We also need to take steps to avoid exposure to toxins such as pesticides and chemicals we use around the house. Try wearing gloves when cleaning to avoid skin exposure and avoid inhaling fumes from things like bleach, oven cleaners, and the like. Make sure dishes and glassware are thouroughly rinsed of any residue from dishwashing liquids etc. Even though they're more expensive, consider buying nontoxic cleansers. Take steps to ensure that the soaps and shampoos you use are made from the most natural ingredients possible. (Aubrey Organics is a good option.) It's also important to get plenty of fresh air and to drink the purest water available.

HERBS THAT BENEFIT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

ASTRAGALUS - A powerful antioxidant which protects the liver from toxins, boosts the immune system and generates anticancer cells in the body.

ECHINACEA - Enhances lymphatic function and boosts immune system.

GINKGO BILOBA - A powerful antioxidant which increases circulation to brain cells.

GOLDENSEAL - An antibacterial which strengthens the immune system and cleanses the blood. (Don't take internally for more than a week at a time or if pregnant.)

ST. JOHN'S WORT- A blood purifier useful in cases of Epstein - Barr virus and HIV.

OLIVE LEAF - Effective against numerous viruses, bacteria and fungi. It has been used in the treatment of people with viral illnesses such as Epstein-Barr disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Herpes and AIDS.

SPIRULINA - Aids in protecting the immune system and cleansing toxins from the body. Though technically a nutrient, not an herb, spirulina is a naturally digestible food that helps protect the immune system and aids in mineral absorption. It helps balance blood sugar levels and supplies nutrients that help the body cleanse and heal.

Other herbs that enhance the immune response are

BAYBERRY,FENUGREEK , HAWTHORN, HOREHOUND and RED CLOVER .

~Herbal Formulas~

Herbs often work best when used in combination with other herbs. There are contraindications for certain herbs if you have an auto-immune disorder. Consult a good herbal book or work with an herbalist to create a blend appropriate for your needs.

~ CLEANSE THE LIVER ~

The liver is our primary detoxifying organ and must be functioning optimally for proper immunity.

Herbs which are useful in cleansing the liver include BLACK RADISH, DANDELION, and MILK THISTLE.

~Other Steps to Improved Immunity~

Proper Nutrition

In addition to using herbs to strengthen and balance the immune system it is important to supply the body with adequate nutrients.

Vitamin A Vital to the body's defense system - known as the infection-fighting vitamin.

Vitamin C Probably the most important vitamin to the immune system. It has a direct effect on bacteria and viruses and is needed for forming adrenal hormones and lymphocytes.

Vitamin E Works synergystically with vitamins A & C as well the mineral selenium as a scavenger of toxic free-radicals.

Zinc Promotes healing of wounds and boosts immune response.

Germanium A trace element which benefits the immune system.

Get sufficient sleep.

Don't Smoke

Excercise Regularly

Reduce Stress and Anxiety.

Stress triggers changes in biochemistry that suppress white blood cell activity and taxes the endocrine system in ways that ultimately result in lowered defense against infection and an impaired capacity for healing. Stress also depletes the body of nutrients. Addressing chronic stress is a very important element of bringing the immune system into balance.

Anxiety Symptoms

by Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN,

Anxiety can cause a variety of physical and mental symptoms. Seek the advice of your health care professional if these symptoms are affecting your daily life. Here are a few of the most common anxiety symptoms.

Chest Pain Chest pains are a frightening symptom of anxiety, and one that should not be taken lightly. If you are at all unsure about the cause of your chest pains, seek medical attention immediately. However, it is sometimes possible to tell the difference between the chest pains associated with anxiety and those of a heart attack. The chest pain of a heart attack is a knifelike pain that usually does not start in the chest. It may be possible to diminish the chest pain from anxiety with deep breathing exercises or a massage.

Neck, Face, and Shoulder Pain Muscle tension and contraction can cause intense pain in the neck and shoulder area. This pain can often be relieved by relaxation exercises or massage.

Difficulty Swallowing Sometimes, anxiety causes the muscles in the throat to contract making it feel as though you cannot breathe or swallow. It is important to remember that this is merely a reaction to anxiety and not a symptom that will cause you any real harm. It may feel unpleasant, but if you can calm down and practice taking slow breaths through your nose, this symptom will soon dissipate.

Indigestion and Digestive Disorders With the release of adrenaline that accompanies anxiety, the blood races through the system and is diverted away from certain areas of the body, such as the digestive tract. This slows the digestion and causes the muscles around the stomach to tense up. This can cause indigestion, heartburn and diarrhea or constipation.

Sweating Sweating is your body's way of reducing an increase in body temperature. When adrenaline is released into the system, the heart begins beating faster and the body heats up (similar to exercising.) This symptom will soon pass as the anxiety subsides and the body's other physical responses return to normal.

Dry Mouth Dry mouth often goes along with the other physical symptoms that are caused by anxiety. This symptom can be alleviated by taking a drink of purified water.

Shaking Shaking is a normal reaction to fear or a decrease in body temperature. When the muscles are tense, they may spasmodically contract and cause friction between the muscles and other body tissues.

Shortness of Breath Anxiety can often make you feel as though you simply cannot get enough oxygen to your lungs. Your chest may feel tight and unable to expand to accommodate the air your body needs. It may even feel as though you are being smothered. Try to relax and remember that this is only a sensation caused by anxiety, you are actually getting plenty of air to your lungs. Sit down and concentrate on taking slow, deep, and regular breaths.

Weakness or Tingling in Extremities When a stressful situation occurs, the body responds with a number of physical symptoms. Anxiety causes changes in the circulation, blood oxygen and blood carbon dioxide levels, and muscle tension. This combination of physical changes can cause a feeling of weakness in the extremities. When blood carbon dioxide levels are altered, it may accumulate in the extremities, causing a tingling sensation. Light exercise may help to alleviate these anxiety symptoms.

Sleep Disorders Insomnia, difficulty staying asleep, and recurrent nightmares are common yet distressing symptoms of anxiety. It is important to try to maintain a regular sleeping schedule and to practice relaxation and breathing techniques to attain a better night's sleep.

Heart Palpitations When the body is faced with a stressful situation, adrenaline is released to prepare for a physical response. This chemical causes the heart to race and feel as if it is missing beats (heart palpitations.) Again, this is a common symptom and it is unlikely to lead to any actual cardiovascular distress.

Pale Complexion Anxiety causes the blood to be diverted to the muscles and away from other areas of the body, such as the face. When the blood vessels in the face receive a reduced blood flow, the skin appears to lose some of its color, or rosy glow. This symptom of anxiety is not dangerous and will usually dissipate as the body's other physical reactions return to normal.

Depression Depression is a common symptom for people who experience anxiety disorders. People who are clinically depressed have a chemical imbalance that may cause or be a side effect of anxiety. You should seek help from a qualified medical professional if you feel a persistent feeling of anxiety.

Headaches Spasmodic muscle contractions and muscle tension can cause discomfort, headaches or even migraines. Tension in the muscles that surround the skull may make you feel as though you have a tight band wrapped around your head. Also, the reduced blood flow to the head and brain can cause pain in the eyes, face, and jaw.

#1 Liquid Vitamin Myth

by Daniel Weigum,

Liquid vitamins have been taking the vitamin supplement spot light. Questionable facts and liquid vitamin claims have plagued the minds of many. The vitamin absorption truth has finally arrived.

The most controversial liquid vitamin myth has to be vitamin absorption superiority. Pill form vitamins offer up to 30% absorption rates while liquid vitamins boast a 90% absorption rate. It is time to prove or disprove this fact in a visual manner.

The fact testing approach performed involves a very simple experiment. The experiment began with a theory. For a nutrient to be absorbed into the blood stream, it will have to be completely simplified before passing through the body's membranes; the villi in the small intestine or the mucous membrane. With this in mind, a pill must be simplified before any nutrient absorption can take place. This will limit the pill form vitamin to basically one pathway of entry into the blood stream; the small intestine.

Liquid vitamins fortunately increase the number of entry pathways into the body which allows for a better absorption rate. A liquid vitamin is already in simplest form. As you drink the liquid vitamin, absorption is already taking place in your mouth's mucous membrane as well as through tissue in your esophagus.

Now, vitamin absorption has to be more than theory. Visual proof of the vitamin supplements ability to pass through a very small membrane has to be possible. With a few items from your kitchen, visual proof is finally possible. A coffee filter can simulate the permeable membrane nutrients must pass through in our bodies. Lemon juice has a pH level comparable to stomach acid. Stomach acid pH levels can range from 1 to 3 depending on conditions in the stomach. Lemon juice has a pH level of 2.3. Two vitamins were chosen based on high popularity and availability but will be kept anonymous to preserve the universal nature of this experiment.

With the vitamin absorption experiment planning complete, the experiment was performed leaving only visual vitamin absorption facts behind. All components were weighed before and after the experiment. Both vitamins spent equal time in the stomach acid equivalent as well as filtering through the coffee filter. The experiment time frames were meant to simulate digestion as closely as possible which takes approximately 2-4 hours in the stomach.

After the filtering process was complete, the vitamin absorption facts were finally visually displayed. The weight analysis revealed 0.2 of an ounce filtered from the liquid vitamin supplement and 0.8 of an ounce filtered from the pill form vitamin. This coincides with the absorption rate facts put to the test. Visual proof of the liquid vitamins ability to absorb approximately 3 to 4 times more efficiently than a pill form vitamin resides in the coffee filter.

Find Out The Latest Methods Of Hair Loss Prevention

by Peter Crump,

Since baldness is hereditary, many people think that there are no methods of hair loss prevention available for them. According to geneticists, a male whose maternal grandfather was bald will more than likely carry the gene for hairloss as well. However, modern day science has developed ways of reversing the hair loss process, opening doors for many men and women to regain their full head of hair. The first and foremost method of hair loss prevention is to take care of your hair. The over use of hair dyes, curling irons and hair dryers is one of the leading causes of hair loss in both men and women.

New hair loss news will tell you that you should never color your hair more often than 6 to 8 weeks and for hair loss prevention, letting your hair turn naturally gray is the best thing you can do. Many women stretch the hair by braiding very tightly and this can lead to significant hairloss as well. Eating the right foods is something else you can do for hair loss prevention. Having enough calcium in your diet is very important to strengthen the hair follicles and roots in the scalp. Illnesses and taking antibiotics often causes hair loss, so keeping yourself in good physical condition enables you to counteract the effect that these have on your hair.

When you wash your hair, you should use a good shampoo and hair conditioner. Keep the split ends trimmed and avoid using hair dryers whenever possible. According to new hair loss news, wearing a cap for long periods of time also leads to hair loss.

If your hair loss is caused by a condition called androgenic alopecia, there are no hair loss prevention methods that you can use, because there is no cure for this condition. However, there are many new treatments that can help. New treatments such as Proscar and Rogaine have been getting a lot of attention in the news regarding hair loss. You have to get a prescription from the doctor for both of these and neither one of them are recommended for women. However, it is unlikely that either one of these will work for total baldness. They are generally successful in cases where some hair is left on the back and the sides of the head.

New hair loss news about hair transplants and hairloss prevention regale the results of this treatment with men, The results are not as promising for women and many women who have not been able to find a suitable hairloss prevention method turn to wigs they can style so that they look perfectly natural. If you are starting to lose your hair and there is no medical reason, dont despair. You dont have to start worrying about putting sunscreen on your head because there are solutions out there.

Hair loss prevention is not necessarily about expense, it can also be simple things.

How to get a lower blood pressure using medical treatment

by Grojan Fabiola,

The treatment for lowering the blood pressure is usually recommend by physicians for patients with a blood pressure of above 160/95mmHg. For those with a blood pressure immediately bellow these values it is taking into account age, sex or other individual factors of the patients before taking the treatment.

The first kind of treatment recommended by all the doctors will be a change in the your lifestyle.

First important change will be stop smoking, second is the moderation of drinking, the consume of alcohol increase the blood pressure. Another good point in lowering blood pressure is the correct alimentation like choosing food low in salts and sodium, consuming a lot of seaweeds, they will dissolve the 'fatty build-ups' from the blood vessels. The final tip regarding natural way to lower blood pressure will be working out; you need to make light exercises like walking, swimming, running for about 30 minutes per day.

But this is not always showing results. And then will begin a medical treatment to lower the blood pressure.

First drugs prescribed are diuretics and beta-blockers, these two represents the medical treatment for lowering blood pressure excluding complicating problem like heart disease. Diuretics are increasing the elimination of salt and water from the organism, lowering the blood and also lowering the blood pressure. As for the beta-blockers, they are reducing the amount of blood that the heart is pomping.

The also-called second line treatment is used only the previous one is ineffective or the patient suffers of other medical problems. There is a list of drugs that is used in severe medical treatment for lowering blood pressure:

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors is stopping the production of a hormone which increases blood pressure called ansiotensin.

Calcium-channel blockers are lowering blood pressure by relaxing the vessels so the blood will flows more easily trough them.

Vasodilators are relaxing the muscles of peripheral arteries, reducing the resistance to the blood flow, and therefor are lowering the blood pressure.

The last type of drugs, the most powerfully of them, are centrally acting drugs. These kind of drugs are blocking the transmission between the nerve impulses and the autonomic nervous system, system that controls involuntary actions of heart and blood vessels.

Ten Things Medical Doctors Are Not Good At

by Gary Cordingley,

Of course, I'm not referring to your doctor who, like Mary Poppins, is practically perfect in every way. But let's just say that the rest of us physicians have things we could do better...

1. Taking time to actually stop and get to know the patient.

I know one lady who says she has a better relationship with the checkout clerk at the grocery store than with her physician. It's true that doctors have a legitimate need to see a certain volume of patients in order to cover practice-expenses and still have money to take home. This translates into a limited amount of time per patient. However, some of the time-pressure doctors feel they are under is of their own making, and even the same amount of time might be better spent.

How is this any different from what a restaurant owner has to do? The restauranteur has to supervise employees, handle deliveries, and oversee the preparation and serving of food, yet still finds time somehow to chat with the customers.

2. Sticking to appointment schedules.

Yes, medicine is unpredictable and doctors must meet the medical needs of the patients in front of them before moving on to others. Patients understand this. But scheduling ten different patients for a 1:00 p.m. appointment is inexcusable.

3. Remembering what happened at the last visit, what test they asked for and why they asked for it.

Need I say more?

4. Dealing with more than one chief complaint per visit.

This is a variant of the time-pressure issue. With the allotted time being only just adequate to cover one problem, woe to the patient who has two or three. There is no easy solution apart from scheduling another visit to handle an additional problem. But if you're the patient, it's in your best interest to prioritize your problems and take control of the agenda. Get the most important issue out on the table first thing and before the doctor launches into an unrelated and time-consuming tangent.

5. Diagnosing conditions for which "objective" tests are not available.

Even modern medicine doesn't have good tests that show every condition as an abnormal blood-level or as a spot on a scan. But that doesn't mean that the untestable conditions don't exist or are somehow less credible. For example, there is no confirmatory medical test for migraine, but unless the 12% of the population experiencing this problem is lying, there are a lot of folks out there for whom the tests might be normal, but they aren't.

6. Staying interested in you when there are no more tests to order or procedures to do.

This is not a good time to drop the ball. Regardless of the outcome of a test or procedure, there is still some unmet need to be addressed.

7. Delivering on promises.

This one seems so needless. For example, why would a doctor promise that records and films will go to a specialist and then not follow through? Better not to make such promises in the first place.

8. Picking up a telephone to call another doctor.

I don't understand why this occurs, but physicians often seem incredibly reluctant to phone another doctor to sort out a question concerning their shared patient. Sometimes they order a nurse or clerk to do it instead, or leave the issue unresolved.

9. Respecting boundaries.

This bears explaining. Boundaries refer to the lines at which one person's rights and responsibilities end and another person's rights and responsibilities begin. Crossing a boundary without permission usually leads to grief and resentment. An example of one doctor not respecting a boundary with another doctor is when doctor #1 tells the patient to change the dose of a medicine prescribed by doctor #2. This leaves the patient caught in the middle.

10. Calling you back with results of procedures and tests.

Once patients have had, say, a scan, a colonoscopy or a blood-test, they start worrying about all the most dangerous things that might turn up. A simple phone call to the patient that nothing bad turned up on the tests and that the details can be discussed at the next visit--even if it comes from staff--prevents a lot of worry and sleeplessness.

There seems to be a recurring theme here. Perhaps I'm revealing my age when I say I am reminded of the chain-gang boss in Paul Newman's "Cool Hand Luke" movie who drawled, "What we have here is a failure to communicate!"

Don't Be A Slave To What You Crave

by Bette L. Hall CMA, NHC,

Positive and Negative Aspects of Chocolate and Sweets

You arent going to be told to give up the chocolate. Chocolate can be good for you. There are, however; some things you need to know about the chocolate and sweet cravings you experience.

When blood sugar levels drop below 65 milligrams, a sweet toot and sugar craving is the result. If the blood sugar level is allowed to continue below the 65 mg., headache, weakness, and even heart palpitations can occur. Thinking becomes slowed and confused which leads to grouchiness and irritability.

Many scientific studies have shown that well being and a positive disposition result when the blood sugar levels remain above the fasting level.

The average American begins the day with high sugar content foods. Think about it. Youre running late for work. You skip having breakfast. You stop at the nearest 7-11 or QT on your way to work and what do you buy? Sugar laden coffee and a couple of donuts! Or maybe you drive through Winchells Donut Shop or Crispy Cream for your morning donuts and sugar-laden coffee.

If you are in a big hurry but not that late, your breakfast consists of the quick and easy. How about pop tarts, toaster strudel, frozen waffles, or coffeecake? And sugar-laden coffee, of course.

All that sugar thats consumed in the early morning hours causes the blood sugar to skyrocket, but in an hour or so it drops to a low level again. The result? Inefficiency and fatigue! The real function of sugar is to efficiently produce energy not fatigue.

The key to maintaining an even blood sugar level for hours after consumption is by adding protein to your breakfast. Drink a glass of milk or eat some yogurt or cottage cheese with breakfast. Another name for cottage cheese is curds and whey. There have been some excellent studies performed recently on the benefits of whey including increased hormone levels and lowered body weight. By adding milk, yogurt, or cottage cheese to your morning meal, youll be taking a healthy step in the right direction.

If you feel you need a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack, eat a protein bar. I didnt say to skip the chocolate. The important point is to add some protein.

Mrs. A was bragging, "I can eat chocolate and still lose weight." It was learned that Mrs. A skipped breakfast and had only a chocolate candy bar for lunch.

She went on to say, "I have to have my chocolate. I would rather starve myself all day than to give up my chocolate."

Studies have shown that chocolate consumption is healthy because of its polyphenol and anti-oxidant properties. "Chocolate is a mild stimulant and mood elevator."1 It tastes good too. In fact, chocolate is delicious. According to a study at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, five out eight women crave sweets. The most prevalent craving being the craving of chocolate.2

Mrs. A would be functioning at a more efficient level by replacing the candy bar with a protein bar. The craving for chocolate and sweets disappears or is at least diminished when the blood sugar level is kept high. That is accomplished by eating protein foods - NOT sugar foods.

What Mrs. A didnt realize is that when a craving becomes so intense that you think you cant live without it, its become an addiction.

Many women crave chocolate every month during either PMS of their menstrual cycle. In addition to a blood sugar level, this craving could also be the result of a nutritional deficiency. Many "chocolate-addicts" crave chocolate because of a chromium and magnesium deficiency.

Chromium helps stabilize blood sugar levels and makes better use of insulin. This action lessens the urge to indulge in those delicious tempting morsels of chocolate.

Another supplement that helps to naturally suppress chocolate and sugar cravings is the amino acid L-Glutamine. Glutamine is known as the essential "non-essential amino acid." It is known to alleviate hypoglycemia.

In summary, chocolate and other sweets can become an addiction for these reasons: 1. Low Blood Sugar Levels 2. Nutritional Deficiency

Supplements that help curb the craving: 1. Chromium 2. L-Glutamine

The best way to curb the craving: 1. Add Protein Foods to Your Meals 2. Eat Protein Foods for Your Snacks 3. Take Supplements ____________________ References

Echinacea could cause liver toxicity and therefore should not be used with other known liver toxic drugs, such as anabolic steroids, amiodarone, methotrexate, and ketoconazole

14. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may negate the usefulness of feverfew in the treatment of migraine headaches

15. Kava when used with alprazolam has resulted in coma

16. Evening primrose oil and borage should not be used with anticonvulsants because they may lower the seizure threshold.

17. Both Rhubard and Aloe cause loss of potassium through the stool... this may increase the side effects of cardiac glycosides and antiarrhythmic drugs.

18. Astragalus (huang qi) may oppose immunosupressive drugs, because it tends to improve immune function.

Some of these herbs are not chinese herbs (feverfew, gingko, valerian, kava, echinacea, everning primrose, borage). If you saw a Chinese herbalist, they wouldn't be an issue. Plus, chinese herbalists prescribe more balanced formulas, not single herbs, so potential interactions with the single herbs are reduced.

Positive Drug Herb Interactions

Gan cao increases the effectiveness of prednisone. This benefit can be used to reduce the dosage of prednisone in patients who have to take it long term. This reduces the serious long-term side effects (bone density loss, adrenal insufficiency, etc.).

In typhoid fever, research showed that those given an herbal formula (xue yang mei) plus a sulfa drug did better than those just given the sulfa drug. Both groups had a 100% cure rate, but the combination group experienced few or no side effects.

In mastitis, those given a heat and toxin clearing herbal formula (jin yin hua, pu gong ying, yu jin, chi shao, dan shen, qing pi) plus penicillin/streptomycin injections did much better than those only given the injection.

In adult primary nephrotic syndrome, one group was simply given corticosteroids, while another group was also given an herb formulas (dan shen, di gu pi, gui ban, han lian cao, hong hua, nu zhen zi, gou qi zi, sheng di, zhi mu). The steroid only group had a recovery rate of 56%, while the combined group's recovery rate was 85%. In another study with nephritic patients, patients given predisone, zhi mu (anemarrhena), shu di huang (rehmannia), and gan cao (licorice) experienced less of the corticosteroid side effects.

Late-stage gastric cancer patients were studied. All patients were given a drug chemotherapy combo of either methotrexate, fluoroacil and vinblastine, or methotrexate, MFC, and fluorocil. One of the two groups was also given herbs (huang qi, tai zhi shen, caulis banthalobi, ji xue tang, bai zhu, fu ling, niu zhen zi, gou qi zi, tu su zi). Side effects were cut in half or eliminated in the chemo plus herbs group.

Solving the Multi-Drug Problem with Herbs

Many patients are on multiple drugs. We have had success reducing these medications over time with the assistance of herbal formulas. An appropriate herbal formula is begun weeks or months ahead of time. This gives the patient a 'cushion,' so to speak. Then the drug dosage is slowly reduced. The herbal prescription is modified as the patient progresses. MD's often cooperate with us in this effort since they know as well as anyone the dangers of poly-pharmacy (taking multiple drugs at once) especially in the elderly. They say a good geriatric doctor stops more medications than he starts.

Herbs are more likely to correct an imbalance permanently (we call that "healing"). Drugs' therapeutic effects are almost always temporary. It takes more time to do this with herbs but it's worth it.

Other Situations that are Helped by Herbal Formulas:

Quitting HRT Instead of just stopping cold (or hot, as the case may be), an herbal formula such as zhi bai di huang wan may be given weeks or months ahead of time. Then the patient's system is more balanced when the HRT is stopped, and rebound symptoms are less likely and less severe.

Breaking the Antibiotic Cycle Some patients perpetually take round after round of antibiotics. Approaches based on the Shang Han Lun (Cold Damage Classic) such as use of the herb formula Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum) have been known to get the patient well and away from the constant need for antibiotics.

Complementing Diuretic Therapy While Chinese Herbs should never be used to add to the diuretic effect of concurrent drug therapy, they can boost the system. Diuretic drugs reduce the excess fluids, but they do not solve the underlying deficiency. Herbal formulas can be prescribed to strengthen the Spleen and Kidney systems.

Quitting SSRI Anti-Depressants Of course this can be dangerous, and should be done with a psychiatrist and an herbalist. Herbs such as St. John's Wort (SJW) could be used as a cushion while quitting. SJW does not replace SSRI's studies show that it must have some other mode of action. Herbal formulas are better anyway. See a Chinese Herbalist.

Quitting Corticosteroids... As we saw in positive interaction #4 above, herbal formulas can be used in conjunction with corticosteroid treatment (for conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, primary nephrotic syndrome, etc.). A chinese herbal formula, Bupleurum and Hoelen Combination (Chai Ling Tang) can be used for withdrawal from corticosteroid therapy. Subsequently, it can be used in place of the steroids for continued treatment.

General Rules for Taking Herbs, Vitamins and Drugs:

Take them at different times. Most drugs are taken with meals to limit Stomach irritation. Take herbs between meals (at least 1 hour before and after a meal2-3 hours would be best) for optimal digestion.

Don't take ascorbic (vitamin C) or salicylic acid (aspirin) at the same time as herbs. The acids will neutralize many of the saponins. Vit C will alter and neutralize herbs so don't drink any orange or citrus juices with herbs either.

Don't take herbs that are supposed to do the same thing as a drug you're on. For example, don't take blood movers like dan shen or dang gui with warfarin. Don't take diuretics like fu ling with diuretic drugs.

You can take an herbal formula to complement the drugs you have to take. This can reduce or eliminate side effects. It really requires a professional see a Chinese Medicine practitioner. This works well in chemotherapy to protect the body. However, in Hepatitis C, the interferon/ribavirin treatment requires some of the uncomfortable symptoms of fever and feeling ill to work. Stopping those side effects with herbs has been known to inhibit the drugs' effects. In the case of Hep C, you can opt for Chinese Herbal therapies instead of the western drug cocktail.
