by Lisa Linde,
A winter plug is basically a cork shaped piece of rubber with a threaded eyeball fitting on top of it. It is primarily used on above-ground swimming pools. Its main purpose is to prevent the water in your pool from running out when the pool's filter and plumbing systems are removed.
A winter plug is used by plugging it into your swimming pool's return jets. The return jets are the holes on the walls of your swimming pools that blow out filtered water. In the water filtering cycle of swimming pools, the water is sucked in by the filter pump and is then passed through the filters. The water is cleaned as it passes through the filter. The filtered water is then ejected by the filter pump through the return jets. When these plumbing systems and filters are detached from the pool, probably to keep it in storage for the duration of the winter season, these return jets basically turn into holes where the pool water can leak. The purpose of the winter plug is to seal those holes.
Why not just leave the filter and plumbing system in place instead of having to plug those return jets? Winter can be a very harsh season. Extreme cold can be damaging to filter and plumbing systems. The water inside them could freeze, and when water freezes, it expands. The expanded frozen water can push the pipes to the point of getting distorted and broken. This is why having a winter plug really is a necessity for any above-ground pool owner especially for those who live in areas that experience winter.
To use it, you first have to loosen the threaded eyeball fitting, then plug it in the open return jet, then tighten the eyeball fitting again until the plug is completely snug in place, thus sealing the hole. Note that you have to do this from inside the pool.
